# What is the Family field used for?

On the constituent's profile page, the **Family** field is used to identify the family the constituent is a member of. It is a legacy field that was available prior to the Household constituent feature. It can still be used to identify constituents who are members of the same family. You can also link constituents together in family relationships via the Relationships tab. The **Family** field is available for reporting from the constituents grid.

To add a constituent to a family, click on the arrow on the right side of the field to reveal the list. If you need to create a new family, click on **Add/Edit.**

You can search for specific or all families using the **Family** field column on the Constituent grid.
