The mailing list Category is used for building the subscription list available to constituents. There are some standard categories delivered with DonorView, but these can be deleted if they are not needed.

As categories are added to mailing lists (the category must be assigned to at least one mailing list), they will be available for subscription. One exception is if the category is marked as private.

The Subscription page will list the categories. Donors subscribe to categories and are added to mailing lists with the selected categories, at that time.

A DonorView page can list the categories.

Another option available is adding a constituent directly to a specific email list versus a category. For example, an event ticket Level, membership Level, or donation page can be set up to add the constituent to an email list.

Managing mailing list categories.

In Workspace > Email Marketing > Contacts or Workspace > Surveys/Forms > Contacts, the left-hand pane shows your mailing lists.

Select a list and click edit.

Select <New/Edit> from the Category drop-down.

Categories with an open green lock are public and may be available to donors to subscribe to.

To mark a category private, click the Edit icon.

Click the open green lock and it will change to a closed red lock.

Save.

You can also delete a category if it is unused by clicking the trash icon.

Note: The category must be removed from all mailing lists before it can be deleted.

There are various ways constituents can subscribe to mailing lists (i.e. categories).

The various DonorView pages (e.g. Donation, Event, etc.) allow you to show the Email Subscription Lists which allows constituents to subscribe.

Workspace > Email Marketing > Contacts

The LINK button provides a URL, which looks something like https://app.donorview.com/abcde, and can be posted on a webpage.

Another way is to create a JMML (Join My Mailing List) Widget. With this option you can select the list categories (which are tied to actual mailing lists) that the donor will be added to; the constituent does not select any categories themselves.

The widget Embed Code is added to your website/page.
